Life’s Like That
Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre
The museum was putting on an exhibit for the artist Walt Humphries titled "Life’s Like That." I worked with two other exhibit designers, the artist, and two outside curators. I designed didactic panels, labels, and planned the artwork layout. I also designed promotional materials and an interactive educational component.
A hallmark of Walt’s artwork is its highly detailed nature. We designed the main introductory panel to focus on one enlarged, wall-sized print of an iconic painting of a wall tent. Walt worked as a prospector, so this painting represented his work and life in the north well. This differed from the curator's initial choice, so we discussed it as a team and brought everyone on board.
We designed a salon-style exhibit based on themes presented by the curator, hanging framed paintings wall to wall. To provide focus, we reserved the central bay for the introductory panel. I was later contracted to design and build an adjoining interactive exhibit.
