Front Facade

Prince of Wales Northern
Heritage Centre

This was one of the first projects I worked on at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre. I proposed decorating the front glass facade.

Since we have long, dark, cold winters in Yellowknife, it is much preferable to view museum opening hours from the warmth of a vehicle. Using the glass facade provided more surface area to display larger text, making it readable from a distance. Large graphics better identified the building and the main entrance. Due to the building's style, many visitors didn’t know it was a museum or which of the several doors was the front entrance.

We used vinyl perforated with tiny holes, similar to those used on bus windows. This ensured security maintained a clear outside view while still allowing light through the windows. The lettering was made of reflective vinyl that lit up at night.

This created an unexpected, magical result: when it was dark outside, light shone from behind the decal, making it look like a mirage.
